Cancer changes everything. From the moment of diagnosis, families are thrown into a whirlwind of medical appointments, treatments, and uncertainty. But behind the emotional weight of the disease, another challenge often looms just as large: the crushing financial toll.
Doctors have a term for it—Cancer-Related Financial Toxicity (CRFT)—and it’s a crisis hiding in plain sight. Studies show that nearly three out of four cancer patients will face some form of financial hardship during treatment. Many are forced to choose between buying groceries or paying medical bills. Some lose their homes. Others file for bankruptcy, which research shows increases the risk of early mortality by nearly 80%.
This is where the Ray of Hope Cancer Foundation steps in. Unlike many organizations, Ray of Hope doesn’t restrict how its grants are used. Instead, it places trust in the patient—handing them the financial lifeline they need to cover rent, keep the lights on, pay for gas, or simply put food on the table. It’s help without red tape, delivered at the exact moment it’s needed most.
Healing Beyond the Physical
Cancer is a war fought not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. The weight of uncertainty and stress doesn’t rest on the patient’s shoulders alone—families, caregivers, and loved ones carry it too. Recognizing this invisible burden, Ray of Hope has expanded its mission to include mental health support grants.
In 2024 alone, they awarded over $56,000 in mental health funding, helping 63 patients access therapy and facilitating nine group therapy sessions. These sessions provide community, connection, and a safe space for patients and families to process the storm they’re navigating.
More Than Numbers
Behind every statistic is a human story.Maria, a retired single parent battling stage 4 cancer while caring for a son with severe autism, was able to continue her treatments thanks to Ray of Hope’s support .TJ, a U.S. Air Force veteran, called his grant “a lifeline” that kept his family afloat during his fight with metastatic cancer. Natalie, living with bone cancer, found stability and dignity when she could afford safe housing and keep her emotional support animals with her. For each of these families, a grant wasn’t just financial support—it was a reminder that they weren’t alone in their fight against cancer.
A Year of Impact
The ripple effect of Ray of Hope’s work in 2024 was profound:
-926 patients supported across 45 counties
-$625,330 in direct financial assistance distributed
-9 support groups founded
-Immediate needs like housing, food, and transportation met during treatment
Thanks to Ray of Hope, families across Colorado were able to breathe a little easier in the midst of one of life’s hardest battles.
Why We Chose Ray of Hope
At Social Cannabis, community is at the heart of everything we do. Through our Be.Social Community Program, we partner with nonprofits who are rewriting what support looks like for Coloradans. Ray of Hope embodies that mission perfectly—meeting families where they are, providing dignity along with assistance, and proving that compassion can make all the difference.
As Social continues to grow with seven dispensary locations across Colorado and our first in New Jersey, so does our ability to help. With every new community we join, we expand our reach and deepen our impact, ensuring that the Be.Social program touches more lives than ever before. This quarter, every qualifying purchase at Social Cannabis will help fuel Ray of Hope’s mission, ensuring more families receive the relief and care they deserve. Because when cancer strikes, no one should have to fight alone—and together, we’re making sure they don’t have to.
