Joints vs Pre-Rolls: What’s the Difference?

Joints and pre-rolls are often used interchangeably, but in cannabis retail they mean slightly different things. A joint is any hand-rolled cannabis cigarette. A pre-roll is a joint made and sold by a dispensary. Here’s how they compare on price, quality, and when each makes sense.

What a Joint Is

A joint is cannabis flower rolled in rolling papers into a cigarette-like cylinder. You can hand-roll one yourself with flower, grinder, papers, and (usually) a filter tip.

Joint sizes vary widely. Solo joints typically use 0.3–0.5g of flower. Social joints for a group can run 1g or more. Variations include cones (pre-shaped papers), blunts (rolled in tobacco leaf wrappers), and pinners (thin joints).

What a Pre-Roll Is

A pre-roll is a joint produced commercially by a dispensary or brand, pre-rolled, and sold ready to smoke. You pay for the convenience: no flower-weighing, no rolling, no fiddling with papers.

Pre-rolls are typically made in one of two ways. ‘Shake and trim’ pre-rolls use the leftover plant material from larger flower products — they’re cheaper but vary in quality. ‘Whole flower’ pre-rolls use ground-up dispensary-grade flower and are usually higher quality.

Infused Pre-Rolls

An infused pre-roll is flower enhanced with kief, hash, or concentrate — sometimes rolled in, sometimes coated on the outside, sometimes both. Common styles include ‘moon rocks’ (flower dipped in concentrate and rolled in kief), ‘caviar’ (pure bud wrapped in concentrate), and ‘diamond-infused’ (flower + THCA diamonds).

Infused pre-rolls are significantly more potent than regular pre-rolls — often 35–50%+ total THC versus 18–25% for standard joints. They’re slower to burn and much stronger. Treat them as a ‘session and share’ product, not a solo burner.

Joint vs Pre-Roll: When to Pick Each

Choose a hand-rolled joint when you want strain-specific flower, control over the flower-to-paper ratio, or simply prefer rolling your own. Hand-rolled joints also let you select premium fresh flower from a deli-style counter.

Choose a pre-roll when you want convenience — out the door and lit in seconds. Travel, social settings, and tip tray outings all favor pre-rolls. Infused pre-rolls are great when you want extra potency without dabbing.
