Percolator Bongs: Types & How They Work

A percolator bong is a water pipe with an extra filtration chamber — the percolator, or ‘perc’ — that breaks smoke into tiny bubbles for smoother, cooler hits. Percolators are one of the biggest smoothness upgrades you can get on a bong, but not all percs work the same. Here’s how the major types compare.

Key Details

What a perc does: Diffuses smoke through water, cooling and filtering it
Main benefit: Smoother, cooler, less harsh hits
Trade-off: More chambers = more drag (harder to pull)
Most common types: Tree, honeycomb, showerhead, inline, turbine, matrix, UFO
Stacked percs: Some bongs have 2–3 percs — maximum filtration, highest drag
Care: Percs need regular cleaning — residue builds up fast in the small holes

What a Percolator Does

A bong works by pulling smoke through water, which cools and filters it before it reaches your lungs. A percolator is a secondary diffusion feature — usually an additional chamber above the main water chamber — that breaks the smoke into even more bubbles, increasing surface area contact with water.

More bubbles = more cooling = a noticeably smoother hit. A good percolator turns a harsh rip into a comfortable inhale, which is why percs are the single biggest upgrade most bong users appreciate.

The Main Types of Percolators

Tree perc: multiple vertical arms, each with slits. Great diffusion, can be fragile.

Honeycomb perc: a flat disc with many small holes. Produces fine, even bubbles; low drag.

Showerhead perc: a single vertical tube with slits around the base. Reliable, common, good balance of filtration and airflow.

Inline perc: a horizontal tube with slits inside a chamber. Simple and durable.

Turbine perc: a disc with angled slits that spin water in a vortex. Visually dramatic.

Matrix perc: a grid of slits (like a showerhead on steroids). Excellent filtration, higher drag.

UFO perc: disc-shaped with holes underneath. Compact and effective.

Single vs Double vs Triple Percs

A single perc is enough for most consumers — it provides a clear smoothness upgrade without making the bong hard to pull.

Double percs stack two filtration stages. Smoother, but with more drag on the inhale.

Triple-perc bongs go all-in on filtration. They produce exceptionally smooth hits but require a stronger pull, and they take longer to clean.

For most users, single or double perc setups hit the sweet spot between smoothness and ease of use.

Do Percolators Reduce Potency?

Water filtration removes some particulates and tar, but THC is not water-soluble — so percs don’t meaningfully reduce potency. What they remove is mostly harsh combustion byproducts and heat.

You’ll still get the same effects from a percolated hit as a non-percolated one; the difference is comfort, not strength.

Cleaning Percolator Bongs

Percolators collect resin fast because of all those little holes and slits. Clean your perc bong every 1–2 weeks with isopropyl alcohol (91%+) and coarse salt as an agitator. Shake gently, rinse thoroughly, and dry before use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a percolator do on a bong?

It diffuses smoke through water in an additional filtration chamber, cooling and smoothing the hit.

What’s the best type of percolator?

For most users, a honeycomb or showerhead perc offers the best balance of smoothness, low drag, and durability.

Do percolator bongs get you less high?

No. Water filtration doesn’t meaningfully reduce THC potency — it mostly removes harsh combustion byproducts and heat.

How many percs is too many?

Three percs is usually the practical limit — beyond that, the bong becomes too hard to pull from and very difficult to clean.

How often should I clean a percolator bong?

Every 1–2 weeks with regular use. Residue builds up fast in the small holes and slits of the percolator.
