Chanda Center For Health – Q1 2024 Be.Social Community Featured Charity
The mission of the Chanda Center for Health is to deliver, advocate, and educate for integrative therapy and other complementary services for individuals with physical disabilities. This can help to reduce disparities and costs by improving health equality and outcomes for individuals with physical disabilities through the support of donors, grants, special events, and community partners.
The Chanda Center For Health: Innovative Holistic Health
Chanda Hinton was paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury at the young age of nine. Unfortunately, her health took a turn for the worse during her college years. During a meeting with her health provider, her sister, a yoga therapist, suggested integrative therapy options. After receiving acupuncture, massage, and chiropractic care, Chanda’s health dramatically shifted within days. As she continued to research why these services were not widely available to people with long-term physical disabilities, she realized that this was a significant problem. This realization led her to establish the Chanda Center for Health.
The Chanda Center for Health is committed to providing access to a range of services, including acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, physical therapy, behavioral health, care coordination, and dental care. The Center offers these services to people living with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and brain injuries.
The Chanda Center for Health believes that people with physical disabilities should have the freedom to create their healthcare path, live independently, and participate fully in their communities. In addition to providing direct services, the Center also advocates for systemic policy changes and improvements to assess healthcare barriers for people with disabilities. Chanda is an unwavering advocate in Colorado, championing bills like the Complementary Integrative Health (CIH) waiver and tirelessly promoting equitable healthcare for individuals with disabilities.
What they Offer
Participants at the Chanda Center for Health have access to a variety of direct services in a warm, inviting, and accessible environment.
The Center is designed to meet the needs of participants from the parking lot to the treatment rooms, ensuring that all participants have the ability to experience integrative therapies that can impact their quality of life.
Examples of direct services include:
- Care Coordination – The Chanda Center’s Care Coordination team works closely with participants to provide access to internal and external resources that support their lifestyle, helping them feel empowered, happy, healthy, and safe.
- Behavioral Health – Our mind and body are closely connected. Counseling helps address cognitive and emotional concerns from life’s challenges. Many participants experience chronic pain, stress, anxiety, trauma, isolation, and depression. Behavioral health services address these issues, through a positive, holistic approach, leading to more good days.
- Massage Therapy – Massage therapy at Chanda Center for Health involves gentle manipulation of soft tissues, boosting circulation and lymphatic drainage. Studies show it reduces pain, anxiety, and disability related symptoms, improving overall health.
- Acupuncture Treatment – Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that involves inserting sterile needles at specific points on the skin to treat various conditions. It regulates the nervous system, boosts endorphins, and supports immune function. Sessions may include advice on diet, lifestyle, or herbal remedies.
- Chiropractic Treatment – Chiropractors at the Chanda Center for Health use modern techniques to gently adjust and stimulate the spine, whether with hands or tools to safely adjust your spine even if you’ve had spinal fusions or hardware. These chiropractors are well-trained in this method.
- Physical Therapy – Physical therapists create customized therapeutic exercise programs that complement participants’ needs. Techniques used to manage pain and improve mobility include joint mobilizations, neural mobilization, graded motor imagery, trigger point dry needling, cupping, and instrument-assisted fibrosis management.
- Adaptive and Aerial Yoga – Starting the day with yoga can bring balance to both our physical and daily lives. Adaptive yoga helps manage stress, connect with our body, and increase strength, balance, and flexibility. It creates space between joints, relieves compression, and reduces tightness.
- Dental Care – The Chanda Center for Health partners with Visiting Ancillary Services to offer participants onsite dental hygiene services for easy access. Participants can receive dental care at the Center and there is no need to transfer from their wheelchair or make a separate trip.
- In-patient Massage and Acupuncture – In partnership with Craig Hospital – the Center offers free massage and acupuncture sessions to individuals recovering from recent injuries at the hospital.
