Cannabis Culture

What is 4/20?

If you’ve been around for a while, you’ve likely heard of 4/20! It’s everywhere these days, popping up on social media or during a stroll downtown. But what does it mean? April 20th isn’t just any holiday for stoners—it’s a meaningful day in cannabis culture! We’ll find out why people associate 4/20 with cannabis, why it’s still popular, and how you can join the 4/20 tradition in your way.

How did 4/20 originate?

The story of 4/20 takes us back to the early days of cannabis use, when staying under the radar was crucial to avoid harsh penalties. It all began in 1971 with a group of high school students in San Rafael, California used the term “4/20” for the first time when they originally referred to the time 4:20 PM. Five high school students- Steve, Dave, Jeff, Larry, and Mark used to hang out after their school and football practices at their favorite spot, a wall outside the school from there they got their nickname “The Waldos”.

The Waldos set out on a cannabis-themed adventure when they got hold of a map supposedly leading to a hidden cannabis plantation in the nearby Point Reyes Forest. Even though they didn’t find the plantation, their journey led to the birth of the term “4:20,” which they used as a code for their cannabis activities. San Rafael High School will always have its place on the map of cannabis culture, but the story of 4/20 doesn’t stop there!

How did 420 spread?

One of the Waldos had a brother who was a close friend of the Grateful Dead, and the band played a significant role in spreading the term “420” among cannabis enthusiasts. They anonymously circulated a poster encouraging people to gather for a smoke at 4:20 pm on April 20th. A reporter from High Times magazine happened to be at the show and received one of these flyers, leading to an article in the magazine. Over time, April 20th became a day of protest, with cannabis activists and enthusiasts worldwide using the day to peacefully advocate for the decriminalization of cannabis. As the popularity of 4/20 grew, so did the events and gatherings, turning into a day for vendors to showcase or promote cannabis-related products and for activists to speak out throughout the day.

In short, what does 420 mean today?

Beyond the parties and smoke, 4/20 reminds us of the progress and challenges in legalizing cannabis and recognizing its medical benefits. It shows how the cannabis community is united and diverse, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together for freedom, knowledge, and acceptance. The history of 4/20 shows how small movements can grow worldwide. What began as a joke among high school friends is now a global day of celebration and advocacy. As we celebrate 4/20 each year, we enjoy cannabis culture and remember its journey. What was once a secret is now a global event where cannabis enthusiasts gather to smoke and rally for their cause.

How is it celebrated?

Today, 4/20 is celebrated worldwide with events ranging from small, intimate gatherings to large public festivals. In cities like Denver, San Francisco, or Vancouver, thousands gather to celebrate cannabis culture, advocate for legalization, and enjoy music, food, and like-minded company.
