What Is Bubble Hash?

Bubble hash is one of the oldest and most respected cannabis concentrates — and one of the only ones made with nothing but ice, water, and agitation. No solvents, no chemistry. Just trichomes washed off the plant and collected through fine mesh bags. The name comes from how it bubbles when heated, a marker of high-quality, full-melt hash.

Key Details

What it is: Solventless concentrate made by washing cannabis with ice water
How it’s made: Cannabis is agitated in ice water; trichomes break off and sink; collected through micron screen bags
Star ratings: 1-star (low quality, smokes through screen) → 6-star (full-melt, dabs cleanly)
Color: Off-white to blonde to dark brown — color tied to wash quality, plant freshness
How to use: Top a bowl, sprinkle in joint, dab (if 5–6 star), or press into rosin
Why it matters: Foundation of all modern solventless concentrates including live rosin

How Bubble Hash Is Made

Bubble hash production starts with fresh-frozen or cured cannabis. The flower goes into a cylindrical washing vessel filled with ice and water. Agitation — by paddle, by hand, or by machine — breaks the trichome heads off the plant material.

The slurry then drains through a stack of mesh bags called bubble bags. Each bag has a different micron rating (typically 220, 160, 120, 90, 73, 45, 25). The mesh sizes filter the trichome heads by size — smaller mesh catches finer, more refined material.

What gets collected on each screen is bubble hash. The grades from each micron level are usually kept separate or blended depending on the maker.

The Star Rating System

Bubble hash is graded 1 to 6 stars based on how cleanly it melts when heated.

1- to 3-star: lower quality, contains plant matter, doesn’t melt cleanly. Best used as a flower topper, in a joint, or pressed into rosin to refine further.

4-star: half-melt. Decent dabbing experience but leaves some residue.

5- to 6-star: full-melt. Melts completely with no residue, suitable for dabbing on its own. The gold standard of bubble hash, with 90 and 73 micron grades typically producing the cleanest result.

Why Bubble Hash Matters in 2026

Bubble hash is the foundation of all modern solventless concentrates. Live rosin — the most prized cannabis concentrate today — is made by pressing high-grade bubble hash. Without bubble hash, there’s no rosin.

Bubble hash also matters because it’s solventless. Many consumers prefer concentrates made without butane, propane, or CO2. Bubble hash is one of the original solventless extractions and remains the cleanest possible expression of a strain’s terpene and cannabinoid profile.

How to Use Bubble Hash

Lower-star (1–3): break off a small piece, sprinkle into a bowl on top of flower, or roll into a joint. Lights smoothly with the surrounding flower.

Mid-grade (4-star): can be dabbed at low temperatures (around 450°F / 232°C), but expect some residue. Also great as a joint or bowl topper.

Full-melt (5–6 star): dab at low to medium temperatures for maximum flavor. A small serving goes a long way — start with a rice-grain-sized dab.

Bonus: any bubble hash can be pressed into rosin with a rosin press at low heat, producing solventless rosin that captures the strain’s terpene profile beautifully.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does bubble hash taste like?

It tastes like a more concentrated version of the strain it came from. Because no solvents are used, the original terpene profile is preserved — expect bright, true-to-flower flavor.

Is bubble hash stronger than flower?

Yes. Bubble hash typically tests 40–70% cannabinoids by weight, compared to 15–30% in flower. A small amount goes much further than the same weight of flower.

How is bubble hash different from kief?

Both are trichome collections, but bubble hash is washed through water and screens to refine, while kief is dry-sifted from a grinder. Bubble hash is generally cleaner and more potent.

Can you dab bubble hash?

Yes — if it’s 5- or 6-star (full-melt). Lower-grade bubble hash leaves residue on the dab nail. For lower grades, top a bowl or roll into a joint instead.

Is bubble hash solventless?

Yes. It’s made with only ice, water, and agitation — no butane, propane, CO2, or other solvents. It’s one of the cleanest extraction methods in cannabis.
