What Is Budder? Cannabis Wax Explained

Budder is a soft, buttery cannabis concentrate known for its easy-to-handle texture and strong flavor. It’s one of the most popular concentrate textures on dispensary shelves, especially for consumers who want something easier to work with than shatter. Here’s what budder is, how it’s made, and how it compares to the other wax-type concentrates.

Key Details

Texture: Soft, creamy, butter-like
THC range: Typically 60–80%
Extraction: BHO or CO2 — whipped during purge to produce the texture
Also called: Cake batter, whipped wax
Best consumption: Dabbing, topped on a bowl, or in a concentrate vape
Shelf life: Several months in a cool, dark airtight container

What Budder Is

Budder is a cannabis concentrate with a soft, creamy, spreadable texture — think peanut butter or softened butter. It’s typically golden to pale yellow in color and holds its shape at room temperature but melts easily with heat.

Chemically, budder is the same as shatter or wax — it starts as a BHO or CO2 extract. The difference is processing. During the final purge, the concentrate is whipped to introduce a creamy texture rather than left flat to set hard.

How Budder Is Made

Cannabis is extracted with butane (BHO) or CO2, producing a crude cannabis oil.

The extract is purged of residual solvent under heat and vacuum.

During purging, the technician whips or stirs the concentrate continuously. This aeration introduces air bubbles and changes the molecular structure.

The result is a concentrate that’s opaque instead of transparent and creamy instead of brittle.

Budder is then scooped into small glass containers for sale.

Budder vs Shatter vs Wax vs Crumble

Budder: soft, creamy, spreadable. Easy to handle, scoops cleanly.

Shatter: hard, brittle, glass-like. Snaps when broken.

Wax: somewhere between budder and shatter — soft but not whipped. Opaque.

Crumble: dry, crumbly texture. Breaks into small pieces.

All four can be made from the same base oil. The difference is purge technique and agitation. Budder is the easiest to portion and handle; crumble is the messiest; shatter is the most visually stable but brittle.

How to Dab Budder

Preheat your quartz banger with a torch until glowing, then let it cool 30–60 seconds to your target temperature (around 500–600°F).

Use a dab tool to scoop up a rice-grain to pea-sized amount of budder.

Drop it in the banger and slowly inhale while rotating the dab tool to spread the vapor.

Cap with a carb cap and inhale the remaining vapor.

Because budder is soft, it’s easier to portion than shatter — you can pick up exact amounts without the ‘snap’ unpredictability.

Other Ways to Use Budder

Top a bowl: add a small amount of budder to the top of a packed flower bowl. The concentrate burns slowly and boosts potency.

Twax a joint: coat a joint with budder before rolling, or stripe it inside before rolling. Makes the joint an infused pre-roll.

Concentrate vape: some concentrate vapes (like the Puffco Peak) work great with budder — it loads easily into the chamber.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is budder?

A soft, creamy cannabis concentrate with a butter-like texture. Typically 60–80% THC. Made by whipping BHO or CO2 extract during the final purge.

Is budder stronger than shatter?

Not inherently. Both run in the 60–80% THC range. The texture difference is about processing, not potency.

How do you use budder?

Most commonly by dabbing — heating a quartz banger and adding a small amount. Can also be used to top bowls or infuse joints (‘twax’).

How long does budder last?

Several months in a cool, dark, airtight container. Avoid heat and light, which degrade terpenes and cannabinoids faster.

Is budder the same as wax?

Similar but not identical. Wax is softer than shatter but not whipped; budder is whipped to a creamy texture. Both are opaque concentrates with similar THC ranges.
