What Is Reclaim? Used Concentrate Residue Explained
Reclaim is the residue left in your dab rig after you’ve dabbed — the leftover cannabis compounds that didn’t fully vaporize. Some people throw it out; some people save it. Here’s what reclaim actually is, whether it’s safe, and what you can realistically do with it.
Key Details
What Reclaim Is (and Isn’t)
When you dab concentrate, not all of the material vaporizes at once. Some of the oil is pulled through the vapor path, cools down, and condenses on the inside of the rig — in the joint, on the percolator, in the water chamber. That condensed residue is reclaim.
Reclaim is not the same as fresh concentrate. It’s been partially vaporized and partially degraded. Its cannabinoid content is lower than the original dab, and its terpene content is much lower because most terpenes vaporize first and don’t condense back.
What Reclaim Looks Like
Typically dark brown to black, sticky, and syrupy. It has a distinctly different appearance from fresh concentrate — much darker and tar-like.
Collection spots in a rig: the joint connection where the banger meets the rig, the downstem if present, and the bottom of the water chamber (though water-contact reclaim is usually discarded).
How much you collect depends on dabbing style — low-temp dabbers collect more reclaim; high-temp dabbers burn more of the concentrate and collect less.
Is Reclaim Safe to Consume?
Generally yes, with caveats. Reclaim is still cannabis concentrate — just less potent and less flavorful than fresh. It’s been heated, so cannabinoids are already decarboxylated.
Caveats: reclaim that’s been sitting in dirty water is a no-go. Stick to reclaim collected from dry parts of the rig (above the waterline). Reclaim from a very dirty rig may have absorbed tars and shouldn’t be used.
Flavor is always worse than fresh concentrate. Expect a harsh, burnt, ‘tar-like’ taste.
Ways People Use Reclaim
Re-dab it: put it in the banger and dab it like regular concentrate. Less flavor, still effects.
Cook it into edibles: reclaim is already decarbed, so it can go directly into infused oils, butter, or capsules without an oven step. This is the most popular use — it turns otherwise-discarded residue into bonus edibles.
Stripe a joint: smear reclaim on a joint before rolling for an infused pre-roll equivalent.
Mix into a bowl: dab it on top of flower before lighting.
How to Collect Reclaim
Option 1: Reclaim catcher. A small glass attachment that screws between the banger and the rig, catching reclaim in a removable cup. Best for regular collectors.
Option 2: Scrape it manually. When cleaning your rig, use a dab tool to scrape reclaim from dry surfaces before going to alcohol. Collect in a small glass container.
Option 3: The ISO pour. Fill your rig with alcohol during cleaning, let it soak, and pour the alcohol-and-reclaim mixture into a glass dish. Let the alcohol evaporate — you’ll be left with concentrated reclaim oil. This method yields the most reclaim but requires patience and an alcohol-evaporation setup.
When to Just Throw It Out
Reclaim from a dirty rig (one you haven’t cleaned in weeks): trash it. The tars and oxidation make it unpleasant.
Reclaim from water: trash it. Water-contact reclaim has absorbed moisture and is hard to use.
Reclaim that smells bad, rancid, or off: trash it. Oxidized reclaim is not worth saving.
When in doubt: if it looks or smells wrong, it probably is. Reclaim is a bonus, not a necessity.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is reclaim?
The cannabis residue left in a dab rig after dabbing — concentrate that partially vaporized and condensed inside the rig.
Can you smoke reclaim?
Yes. You can re-dab it, smear it on a joint, or add it to a bowl. Expect harsher flavor and lower potency than fresh concentrate.
Is reclaim as strong as fresh concentrate?
No. Some cannabinoids degrade during the original vaporization, and terpenes are mostly gone. Reclaim is weaker and much less flavorful than fresh concentrate.
How do you collect reclaim?
Use a reclaim catcher (best option), scrape it manually from the rig, or dissolve it in alcohol and let the alcohol evaporate. Avoid reclaim from water.
Is it worth saving reclaim?
For regular dabbers, yes. Reclaim is already decarbed and works great in homemade edibles. For occasional dabbers, probably not worth the effort.
