Sunnyside Music Festival: A Local Tradition
The Sunnyside Music Festival started the way the best things in this neighborhood always do: with neighbors who just wanted to do something good together. In 2000, what was then called the Sunnyside Bluegrass Festival was born in someone’s backyard. A casual, come-as-you-are gathering for friends and neighbors that began with a handful of bands, a small crowd, and a lot of dogs. The following year, a mountain monsoon rolled in, and the crowd still showed up.
As the event grew, the cost of permits and logistics started threatening its most important feature: free admission. In 2007, a group of determined Sunnyside neighbors secured grant funding to revive it, rallying local musicians and businesses to help bring the festival back to full life. Now in its 26th year, it has become a genuine cornerstone of Northwest Denver.
